In an age where green straws
When given the choice: choose the local coffee shop.
Why:
In the small town of Black Mountain, NC, there sits a coffee shop called The Dripolator. I frequent ‘The Drip’ and in turn have grown to love it. The Dripolator roasts their own beans and pulls from fair trade and organic exports. Their coffee is fantastic; but even better is the community that ‘The Drip’ provides.

On my daily visit (sometimes twice a day) I am met with baristas that I know by name and locals that I know by face (and some by name). After visiting this place over and over again, I have found myself nestled into a beautiful community. Nestled into a community that knows me by name, face, and that I drink my coffee black.
When I have work to do, I go to ‘The Drip’; when I have no work to do, I go to ‘The Drip’; when I have a friend in town, I go to ‘The Drip’, when I have no friends in town, I go to ‘The Drip’ (and find friends); also I occasionally go to ‘The Drip’ for coffee.
My plea is simple; put a face to your money. Don’t let your money get shipped around through big corporations; let it stay in town, with the person you know, who puts food on their table by putting money back into businesses that support your friends and family. Support them and they will support you. Uphold them and they will uphold you.
Don’t be silly.

I agree. I find the best coffee at shops that grind their own beans.
It makes a huge difference! Coffee loses like 90% of it’s flavor after its been ground, so it’s very important to wait until you are ready to brew to grind!
The Dripolator doesn’t just grind its own beans, though – it roasts its beans. And they’ll ship their beans.
Yea that is definitely one of the best things about them. Roasting your own beans makes a huge difference in flavor when compared to ordering from another roasting company. It ensures that the coffee shop always has fresh quality beans! Thanks R. A. Vermillion

I like coffee, but don’t know a lot about it to make distinctions on where beans are ground, etc. I love this post because we should support our local economy. I’m recently new to Bend, OR and they have coffee shops that are fun. When I have cash, I think I’ll remember your post and make a point to get out.
We certainly should support our local economy; coffee shops are just one of the great places you can do that! And YES–Oregon has some of the best coffee shops in the world. Do it!

I admit that I never drank coffee until Starbucks came to town. American coffee doesn’t taste like real coffee, and I’d had real coffee in Brazil and Mexico. Although there were places I could buy Mexican coffee, Starbucks made it so much easier – and it started a sort of “coffee revolution” here in the Midwest. I have a niece who lived in Seattle and she was totally against Starbucks. She stuck with local roasters. It’s not that I love Starbucks – but that chain led to an interest in good coffee, and several roasters popped up and began selling their coffee here. Once people realized coffee didn’t have to taste like bitter water, they began going to local coffee shops. Chicago has its own brand, Intelligentsia, and Milwaukee has Colectivo. Colectivo has its own coffee shop in Milwaukee, but Intelligentsia doesn’t. You can get Intelligentsia at select coffee shops in Chicago but I think having a coffee shop that features your brand is better. In addition, we sometimes buy coffee at farmers’ markets during the summer.
Unfortunately, the suburb where I live doesn’t have a coffee shop that serves good coffee – it’s all “American coffee.” So we drink the good stuff at home and frequent local restaurants and coffee shops for food. At a couple of local restaurants I go to frequently, it’s fairly common to see people I know. Plus we know the managers and waiters by now, too!

Local coffee shops have such a great personality you can’t get with the “green straw”. As a small town local owned coffee shop we love your post. We provide a place for community meetings, celebrations, a place to works and a great cup of coffee to be enjoyed with friends. We purchase our beans from a roaster in our state and love offering local vendors/artisans a place to showcase their items. We love our regulars! support your local businesses!

As a I reply, I’m sitting at a local coffee shop watching friends come in and out! That being said…..I agree with ya!!
We have a great little string of Coffee Shops here in NJ called Booskerdoo. They are a bakery and coffee roaster. Theres also a not so coffee shop feeling coffee shop string here called Rook. Not a huge fan of Rook due to the no seating policy.
Yea I like places where you can find a place to sit for sure!! Booskerdoo sounds cool; I may look them up!
I love this idea. I don’t drink coffee out much (law student life), but when I do, I try to drink local! they have better coffee and chai
