The Difference Between Organic & Non-Organic Coffee

Maybe you have noticed that more and more coffee companies are advertising theirs as "Organic" compared to companies that have no such label. Often times organic coffee corresponds with higher prices and generally speaking; more hipster labels. This can be a deterrent when purchasing coffee, however, here is my plea to help you consider choosing the organic coffee when you have the opportunity financially.

I wanted to name this article; The Huge Difference Between Organic & Non-Organic Coffee”  but I figured it would be too many words.

Maybe you have noticed that more and more coffee companies are advertising their coffee as Organic as opposed to companies that have no such label. Often times organic coffee corresponds with higher prices and generally speaking; more hipster labels. This can be a deterrent when purchasing coffee, however, here is my plea to help you consider choosing the organic coffee when you have the opportunity financially.

Here is a one-minute read to simplify things for ya:

Bad News About Non-Organic Coffee:

According to CS Monitor, conventional coffee farmers apply up to 250 pounds of chemical fertilizers per acre. What we then find is that there can be up to 1,000 chemical compounds present in each cup of coffee. This is a huge problem due to all the health risks that are strongly related to pesticide use in farming. While these chemicals allow farmers to produce up to twice as much coffee, the hoops they jump through to do so are not very glamorous for the consumer.

This is also a serious problem for the actual coffee farmers. During the process, they are exposed to all of the toxic levels of harmful chemicals and it becomes very hazardous to them. Companies that only use organic coffee in turn are choosing to not support these hazardous conditions.

Without the added chemicals from farmers, organic coffee not only doesn’t have the negative health related risks, but actually has higher antioxidants and chlorogenic acid, which are helpful in preventing type 2 diabetes and lowering blood pressure.

How Does This Affect Decaf Coffee?

In order to remove the caffeine from the coffee, chemicals generally have to be applied in the extraction process. What then happens is that the decaf coffee tends to have even more caffeine in it than simply regular coffee.

However, if you can’t handle regular strength coffee, there is good news. There are many companies such as Short Sleeves Coffee Co. that use a water process to extract the caffeine from the coffee without having to use harmful chemicals. Cheers!

Benefits For The Environment:

Using organic resources actually helps farmer to conserve soil moisture and water resources; two major problems with conventional farming techniques. Also, organic coffee helps to create an agriculture that is biologically diverse.

There ya have it! We hope that simplified a few things…

Bottom Line:

Due to the health and environmental risks associated with Non-Organic coffee, when given the choice, choose organic. Along with that, make sure to look for “Water Processed Decaf” when choosing a coffee without the caffeine.
